About Kun Su
Otherwise known for his monumental oil paintings, Kun Su is exhibiting works from a series of single-sheet etchings he created in 2015 during his studies in Beijing. The series comprises one hundred unique pieces. Presented as an unbound portfolio, they unfold in loosely structured chapters, in which motifs such as rising smoke, fragile blossoms, or the vastness of the sea coalesce into a quiet, atmospheric narrative.
The traces of printing ink remaining on the metal plate—fine, almost fleeting brushstrokes and wipes—are transferred as negatives to the paper during the printing process. This creates image surfaces that reveal a subdued sensitivity imbued with inner tension. The material conditions of intaglio printing are not only made visible but are transformed into a poetic structure that oscillates between presence and absence.
